The highest peak in Maharashtra, Kalsubai is a dream destination for many and often called the “Everest of Maharashtra” at 5400 feet above sea level. The hike includes a steep climb through the rugged terrain but you’ll be rewarded with a stunning view of the Sahyadri mountain rage and Bhandardhara backwaters. Bari Gaon is the base village for Kalsubai trek just three hours’ drive from Mumbai. You can also take a train from Mumbai to Kasara and then a bus to reach the base village.
Situated at 2100 feet above sea level, Peb Fort trek starts from the Neral through a lush forest with few rock patches. It is an easy to moderate trek and suitable for beginners. The fort also has numerous caves, temples and even a meditation chamber. The view of the hills, lush greenery and the base village from the top of the fort is just spectacular and worth the hike. One could board a train from Mumbai’ s Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus to reach Neral.
One of the most popular trekking destinations in the state, the Raigad Fort holds great importance in the history of Maratha Empire. It is located at around 2700 feet above sea level and provides easy to medium level trek. It takes around one and half hour to reach the top and you’ll be totally impressed with this centuries-old fort surrounded by lush greenery which further gets improved during the monsoon. You can take an overnight bus from Mumbai to Mahad village and another local bus to the base of the fort.
Just three hours’ drive from Mumbai, Prabalgad fort stands at about 2300 feet above sea level and offers a moderate level hike and is perfect for beginners. Like any other fort in the region, this fort was also under the Maratha and Mughal rulers. It is a popular a trekking destination in the Sahyadri Mountain Range and truly comes alive in the monsoon season. Thakurwaki is the base village for the trek which can be reached by taking a local train to Panvel and then a 15 minutes’ bus ride.
Situated in the wilderness of Koyna wildlife sanctuary, the Vasota Forts offers a thrilling adventure to trekkers as well as wildlife enthusiasts. The hilltop fort is about 3842 feet above sea level and offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding Koyna river. Shiv Sagar Lake and Nageshwar Caves are few other attractions here that should not be missed. Take overnight bus or train from Mumbai to Satara and then another local bus to reach the base village of Bamnoli.
