Brightsun’s Complete Guide to Almaty - Kazakhstan

Here’s everything you need to know for planning a trip to Almaty in Kazakhstan!

Almaty, Kazakhstan’s largest city and former capital, is a vibrant urban hub set against the stunning backdrop of the Trans-Ili Alatau and Tian Shan mountains. Surrounded by snow-capped peaks and filled with tree-lined boulevards, eclectic architecture, and a thriving cultural scene, Almaty offers the perfect balance of nature and city life. Whether you're an adventure seeker, a culture enthusiast, or simply looking to unwind, this city has something for every kind of traveller. With Kazakhstan offering visa-free entry for Indian travellers, Almaty is an ideal destination for a quick yet memorable getaway. It serves as an excellent base for exploring the natural wonders of Central Asia.

Read on to find everything you need to plan your trip to Almaty—from must-visit spots to tips for making the most of your stay.

Direct Flights to Almaty from India

Direct flights are available from Delhi with Air Astana and IndiGo with return fares starting from just Rs. 25,262*. The flight duration is approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes, making it a great option for a quick getaway. Upon arrival, immigration is typically smooth, but make sure to carry printed copies of your flight and hotel bookings in case the immigration officer requests to see them. Generally, only the boarding pass is needed.

Things to Keep in Mind Before Travelling to Almaty

Kazakhstan offers visa-free entry for Indian travellers, but it's always advisable to check the latest visa requirements before your trip, as these regulations can change frequently.

The local currency is KZT (Kazakhstani Tenge), with the exchange rate approximately:

1 KZT = 0.17 INR
1 USD = 500.95 KZT

While credit and debit cards are widely accepted, it’s always a good idea to carry small denominations of local currency for convenience. We recommend carrying USD and exchanging it for KZT at the airport.

Transportation from the airport is quite affordable, with taxis readily available. Uber is not operational in Kazakhstan but you can use the Yandex Go app to easily order a taxi for transfer to your hotel or any other destination.

Make sure to download Google Translate or any other translation app of your choice on your phone, as English is not widely spoken or understood in many areas.

Best Time to Visit Almaty

Almaty is a year-round destination, with each season offering unique experiences. However, the most ideal times to visit are during peak summer (August-September) when the lakes are particularly vibrant and the perfect shade of blue, and in the winter months (December-January) for those looking to enjoy snowfall and winter sports. A 4-day trip is usually enough to experience Almaty and its nearby attractions. It's also worth noting that Almaty is one of the coldest cities in the world, so be sure to pack appropriately, especially if you're visiting during the winter months.

What to Do in Almaty

Enjoy a visit to Kok-Tobe

A trip to Kok Tobe, or “Green Hill,” is a must for breathtaking views of Almaty and the surrounding mountains. You can reach the top via a picturesque cable car ride, where you'll find the impressive 372-meter-tall television tower. The summit is home to Kok Tobe Park, offering a serene ambience with a mini zoo, souvenir shops, and the reknowned “LOVE” sculpture. The observation deck offers a stunning 360-degree view of the city, making it an ideal location for photos.

Discover soviet history at Panfilov Park

Situated in the centre of Almaty, Panfilov Park dates back to the 19th century with fairy-tale-like Zenkov Cathedral standing in the middle. Today, the park’s monuments—including the statue of Ivan Panfilov, an eternal flame honouring fallen heroes, and a collection of Soviet-era tanks and artillery—serve as powerful visual reminders of Soviet military heritage.

Book a massage at the 70s-era Arasan Baths

Arasan Baths is a striking 1970s-era bathhouse that blends traditional Turkish-style bathhouse culture with bold Soviet Modernist architecture. Stay at least for 2 hours to experience its variety of steam rooms, including a Finnish sauna, Russian banya, and Moroccan and Turkish hammams. For a deeper unwind, you can book a massage or a traditional veniki treatment—gentle beating with oak leaves. Entry starts at 1,500–2,000 tenge (around US$3–4) per hour, with additional charges for services like massages or rentals of sandals and towels.

Try the local dishes

Kazakh cuisine offers a delightful blend of Asian and Russian flavours. Be sure to try traditional dishes like Besbarmak (boiled meat served with homemade noodles resembling lasagna sheets), manti (steamed dumplings filled with minced meat), and local cheeses such as Irimshik and Kurt (dried balls of sour milk with salt). For an authentic taste of Kazakhstan, head to Navat, a popular restaurant chain in Almaty, where you can sample these delicious treats!

Explore culture at city’s top-notch museums

Explore Kazakh history at the Central State Museum, showcasing everything from prehistoric artifacts to carved balbal columns and gold treasures. The Kazakhstan Museum of Arts boasts the world’s largest collection of Kazakh art, featuring Soviet-realist painter Abylkhan Kasteev. For contemporary Kazakh art, visit the Tselinny Contemporary Arts Centre, reopened this year, to experience the work of emerging local artists.

Get a good bargain at Green Bazaar

A visit to Almaty’s Green Market is a must when in Central Asia. This bustling market offers everything from fresh produce and herbs from the Kazakh mountains to Chinese teas and dried fruits from Uzbekistan. Don’t miss the dairy section for kurut, a salty cheese popular with shepherds.

Tip: Bargaining is expected, so feel free to negotiate prices!
